all the tips & tricks needed to successfully add a background video to your website block

Updated over 2 weeks ago

We're thrilled to announce our latest feature: the ability to upload background videos to your website blocks! This addition brings a sleek, professional look to your pages and can really elevate your website to the next level. Follow the steps below to get started.

Step-by-Step Instructions

How to Upload a Background Video

Adding a background video is quick and easy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Website Builder
Go to the editor, then select the block where you want to add a background video.

  2. Navigate to Background Settings
In the block settings, go to the ‘Background Image’ section.

  3. Switch from Image to Video
Toggle from ‘Image’ to ‘Video’ to enable video uploading.

  4. Upload Your Video
Click the blue video button, which will open a pop-up screen. Here, you can either click the ‘Upload’ button or select an empty preview area to choose a file. (Note: the system filters for MP4 files, but you can change this filter to view other file types.)

  5. Wait for the Upload to Complete
The upload may take a moment; you can track its progress on the status bar. Once the upload finishes, the pop-up will close automatically.

  6. Save Your Block
Click ‘Save Block’ to apply your changes. The page will refresh, and your new video background will appear in the block.

Preview Your Changes
The video may take 5-10 minutes to display on your preview site. We recommend making any final edits to your video file before uploading.

Additional tips

Adding a video background to your website block will make your website look slick and professional. We have added a few helpful tips that will give you the best results.

File Type

Supported file types include .mp4 and .webm.

Even though GIF files look like a video, these are actually categorized as Image types, so GIF files will not be supported as a background image.

Size

The maximum file size is 5MB (5000KB). If your video exceeds this limit, try these options:

  • Change File Type: Converting to a smaller format may reduce the file size.

  • Compress Your File: Online tools such as FreeConvert or CloudConvert can help compress files to meet size requirements. While we’ve had positive results with these services, we aren’t affiliated with them and can’t guarantee specific outcomes.

Duration

The maximum length for background videos is 30 seconds. If your video is longer, try trimming it; this will also reduce file size—a win-win!

Resolution and Quality

For the best experience, keep the following in mind when choosing the resolution and quality of your background video:

  • Resolution: We recommend using HD (1280x720) or Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. Higher resolutions, like 4K, are usually unnecessary for backgrounds and may slow down load times, especially on mobile devices.

  • Bitrate and Compression: Aim to keep the video’s bitrate lower to optimize for web use, as higher bitrates can increase file size and load times. Compressing your video while maintaining visual quality is key for a smooth playback experience.

  • Autoplay Considerations: Background videos autoplay without sound. Ensure your video’s resolution and quality are balanced to load seamlessly across devices, especially on mobile where data usage may be a concern.
